SYNVISC® is an injectable fluid for treating osteoarthritis (OA) that is sterile, non-pyrogenic, and elastoviscous. The fluid contains hylans, derived from hyraluronan, the part of synovial fluid that provides elastoviscosity. SYNVISC® temporarily replaces and supplements synovial fluid before the hylans degrade naturally, just like hyaluronan, leaving only nontoxic byproducts. SYNVISC® benefits patients most who are active and regularly use the affected joint, but it can help patients in all stages of Osteoarthritis joint problems. SYNVISC® acts as a viscosupplement for the joint, restoring volume and lubrication to the arthritic joint to allow greater movement and reduce pain and discomfort. Only physicians should inject SYNVISC® to treat osteoarthritis pain in the knee, ankle, hip, or shoulder. Usually 2 ml of SYNVISC® is injected into the knee in three injections a week apart, and all three injections are needed for the best results. The maximum dosage is six injections in six months, with at least four weeks between treatment sets. Clinical data shows osteoarthritis patients can experience up to a year of relief from one set of SYNVISC® injections.
